Dark Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

Cherry season is upon us and what better way to celebrate then whipping up a quick Dark Chocolate Cherry Smoothie.  Fresh cherries, banana, dark chocolate cocoa powder and yogurt make this a delightfully creamy smoothie.

Dark Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

Cherries are my thing in the summer.

At least 4 out of the 7 days of the week I eat a bowl of cherries for an evening snack.  Addicted? Maybe.  I rarely make it past snacking on cherries to actually use them in recipes, because lets be honest, they are that good on their own but today I decided to share a simple way to incorporate them into a smoothie, with this Dark Chocolate Cherry Smoothie. Cherries and dark chocolate go great together too, so it just made sense.

As a child growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan we were lucky to have fresh cherries everywhere.  I miss living in Michigan with all of their amazing produce, but we do go back to Traverse City, Michigan yearly for a quick family vacation.  If you have ever been to Traverse City you probably know that it is cherry heaven.  You will find cherries in everything there.

You guys know my love for smoothies by now.  I figured there was no better way to use cherries then in a creamy, sweet and slightly tart smoothie.  I love to make this in the afternoon as a little treat that I share with the kids.  This also makes a nice addition to breakfast. Who doesn’t like a little chocolate to start the day?

Dark Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

This Dark Chocolate Cherry Smoothie is a mixture of fresh cherries, a banana, plain yogurt {you could sub Greek yogurt} and dark chocolate cocoa powder. It gives you calcium, probiotics, antioxidants and potassium all in one little, beautiful glass.  I was also thinking this would make delicious popsicles. You can easily make a double batch and freeze these into cute, little treats for the kids and you will be forced to join in on the fun and try a popsicle too.

This was a delicious way to start our day. I used frozen cherries, so I didn't use any ice. This probably thickened it a bit. To loosen it up, I added about half a cup of almond/coconut milk to our doubled batch. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I definitely will add this to our regular smoothie rotation!

Can I leave out the banana, though? I like the fruit but I don't really like it in my smoothies.

You could but the banana helps to get a creamier consistency. I would use a handful of ice {more or less depending on how thick you like your smoothie}. I also think the smoothie will have a pretty intense cherry flavor considering the banana won't be in there, but as long as you like cherry it should work. Let me know!

This was delicious! My son is allergic to milk, so I subbed soy milk for the yogurt. Thumbs up from both of us!
