4 Ingredient Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

Do you ever find yourself tired and starving in the afternoon?

Or do you eat breakfast but not feel satisfied?

Today’s 4 Ingredient Peanut Butter Smoothie is a great way to take care of those problems!

Smoothies are a favorite in my house. We love making this Blueberry Banana Smoothie, a Pineapple Smoothie, a 4 Ingredient Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie or a Blueberry Kale Smoothie.

My kids love them for breakfast or as a snack.

I make a lot of different kinds of smoothies from fruit based smoothies to vegetable based smoothies to peanut butter based smoothies.

Today’s 4 Ingredient Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie is one of our favorite smoothies to make.

My kids think that it tastes like a milkshake and I have to agree with them.

The frozen banana helps create a creamy smoothie and the peanut butter and dates give it a nice smooth, sweet taste.

I like this smoothie because it has calcium, potassium and protein to help start our day or get us over the afternoon slump.

WHY SHOULD I USE DATES IN SMOOTHIES?

I love them because they are naturally sweet and add a wonderful taste to smoothies without adding sugar. I always keep a container of dates in my pantry for all of my smoothie making needs.

Here are a few facts you might not know about dates:

  • Dates are a powerhouse of potassium, the mineral that protects the heart by keeping sodium levels in check and prevents high blood pressure.

  • A 1-cup serving of dates contains up to three times as much potassium as a 1-cup serving of bananas.

  • They are an excellent source of dietary fiber, which supports the digestive system and provides a sense of fullness.  Dates are also plentiful in B-complex vitamins, and minerals like magnesium and iron.

I modify this smoothie a lot by changing up the milk.

Sometimes I use skim milk, other times I use almond or soy milk. It tastes great any way you do it!

OTHER OPTIONS TO ADD TO SMOOTHIES:

HEMP SEEDS: Do you use hemp seeds? They are great in smoothies and they are packed with so much power. 1 Tablespoon of those small seeds is 5 grams of protein.

That will help keep you feeling full and give you the energy you need. I suggest adding it to your smoothies if you have it on hand!

NUT BUTTER: Nut butters are another great way to add protein and help the texture of the smoothie.

I find if my smoothie is too thin that adding a few Tablespoons or almond of peanut butter will help thicken it.

SPIRULINA: Spirulina is an organism that grows in both fresh and salt water.

One Tablespoon of spirulina  of dried spirulina powder contains protein, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B3, copper and iron. This is another powerhouse ingredient you can add.

OATS: You might be thinking – oats? And yes, they are a great addition to smoothies.

They will thicken it some but I actually like it. You can dump rolled oats straight into the blender. They help keep you full and give you energy thanks to the fiber!

PROTEIN POWDER: If you are looking to up your protein in-take, for example after workouts, try protein powder. There are a lot of varieties in the stores now and some are even flavored.
