AIR FRYER CHICKPEAS
I have a serious love for chickpeas and they are a great healthy snack or a salad topper. They are a great source of protein too which is a bonus.
I use them in so many ways from snack on Crunchy Roasted Chickpeas to using them in Chickpea Salad Recipe to adding them into soups like this Garbanzo Soup.
We make the Crunchy Roasted Chickpea recipe a lot in my house as a delicious snack for my kids.
I recently tried them in the air fryer and I knew I had to share these Air Fryer Chickpeas with you.
They are so easy to make and I love that you can create a crispy chickpea in the air fryer.
I am often looking for quick, healthy snacks for my family and crispy chickpeas are a great option.
I keep a mason jar of these in my pantry to eat throughout the week.
If you find that the air fryer garbanzo beans get soft just heat them up in the air fryer for a few minutes to create that crispy texture we all love.
What Ingredients are in Air Fryer Chickpeas?
- CHICKPEAS: This recipe uses 2 cans of chickpeas. If you prefer you can use dried chickpeas that have been soaked. Here is how to soak dried chickpeas.
- EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL: I use extra virgin olive oil when I make these crispy chickpeas. You could use avocado oil or regular olive oil.
- SPICES: The spice mixture in this recipe creates a deep, rich flavor in the chickpeas that I love. The spices it uses are chili powder, cumin, brown sugar and garlic powder. You can of course use more or less of each spice depending on your tastes.
- POWDERED CHEESE: To create a fun twist on these chickpeas the recipe adds in powdered cheese. You can easily leave this out if you prefer and they will still taste delicious. You can find powdered cheese in the aisle near the popcorn.
How Do You Make Air Fryer Chickpeas?
Drain and rinse the chickpeas.
Cover a baking sheet with a paper towel. Transfer the rinsed chickpeas to the paper towel in a single layer on a baking sheet.
Cover the garbanzo beans with paper towels or kitchen towel and LIGHTLY dry the beans the best that you can. It is important to have dry chickpeas when you go to air fry them.
It’s very important that we get the garbanzo beans as dry as possible! Let the garbanzo beans sit and dry for 30-60 minutes.
Once the garbanzo beans are dry, pour them into a medium sized mixing bowl.
Pour the olive oil over the beans and gently toss the chickpeas in the olive oil.
In a separate medium bowl mix the chili powder, cumin, brown sugar, garlic powder, pepper, salt and powdered cheddar cheese {optional}. Pour the spices over the chickpeas and gently mix well.
Spray the tray of the air fryer basket with olive oil or avocado oil or alternative spray oil. I prefer avocado oil due to its high smoke point.
Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.
Add the chickpeas to the pre-heated tray of the air fryer and evenly spread them across the tray.
Cook the crispy air fryer chickpeas at 400 degrees for 15 minutes making sure to shake the tray of the air fryer every 5 minutes.
After around 12 minutes of cooking time, check the chickpeas to be sure that they are not overly baked but are golden brown.
*Typically, 15 minutes of baking time should make nice and crispy garbanzo bean poppers…BUT each air fryer is different, so check on how things are cooking along the way.
Remove the poppers from the air fryer when they are crispy and let them cool on a baking tray. Eat them or store them in an airtight container for up to 5 days. You will love these crunchy chickpeas.

Notes
Air fryer garbanzo bean poppers can either be eaten right away, or stored for up to a week in a Ziploc bag or sealed container for “snacking” later on! Storing the garbanzo poppers may make them soft the next day. If needed, just drop the garbanzo bean poppers back into the air fryer for 2-3 minutes at 400 degrees to crisp them back up!
