It has been about two weeks since I returned from Europe and I have had some time to process the trip and all of the beautiful, amazing places we went.

The jet lag has FINALLY worn off. I forgot how long it takes to recover from jet lag.  Throw a toddler and work into the mix and forget about it. So I spent most of last week going to bed at about 7:30 when my son went to bed and getting up at 5am because I couldn’t sleep. But then this morning brought me back to reality when my alarm went off at 6:30 and I had to push snooze a couple of times.  Funny how fast you can get right back into the daily grind!

If you follow me on Instagram or have read my blog over the past few weeks you may have seen tidbits of my trip.  My hope was to put some of our trip down on paper, well virtual paper.  I have a huge file of pictures, because lets be honest my husband and I love taking pictures but I thought writing about our trip would be a nice way to document it.   I am not sure if people that read a food blog and are looking for recipes are interested in my trip but for those that are I am going to share with you a little of our journey.

Our first stop on our 12 day trip was Munich, Germany. We took an overnight flight from Chicago to Munich (direct flight might I add!).  The goal was to sleep on the plane ride over and my mission was accomplished. If you know me you know I am a light sleeper so the fact I slept on a plane was surprising!

After a 9 hour flight we arrived in Munich, grabbed our huge backpacking backpacks and made our way to our hotel.  It was a little bit rainy while we were in Germany but that didn’t stop us from seeing the city.

When you think food & drink in Munich what do you think?

Well for one thing I think of pretzels and beer.  I have to admit, even though I am half German, I am not a big fan of German food. It is just too heavy for me and since I don’t eat very much meat I wasn’t very into the food. BUT–the beer in Germany as you can imagine is tasty and the pretzels are even better.  Some pretzels are as big as your head…

A few places we went had some sort of cheese spread (you can see it in the above pictures) for the pretzels that my husband and I could not get enough of. We did a little googling and we think we found a recipe for here that I might try soon!

Enough of my rambling and on to the pictures.

Munich isn’t complete without a stop at a few beer halls.

Munich also had a really great market with fruit, vegetables, gifts and even an olive bar. Heaven!

If you ever get a chance to go make sure you hit up the Englischer Garten. Complete with river surfing, beautiful green trees and of course a really cool beer garden called The Chinesischer Turm (The Chinese Tower)!

 There are two spots we found that people river surf in Munich–kinda crazy but really cool to watch!

After Munich we took a two hour train to a place called Fussen, Germany to see two castles, Neuschwanstein, and Hohenschwangau.  They were amazing castles up close and we got a chance to see the Bavarian countryside which was beautiful and very relaxing.

I am sure there are a lot of fun things to do in Germany but here are my quick suggestions from our two days there:

• Stroll around the city center and see the churches and beautiful buildings. I know people that have done walking tours and bike tours and loved them.  It rained so we just toured on our own.
• Get a beer and pretzel and of course the cheese at the Hofbrauhaus and Der Pschorr (this place had really good food too–the roasted chicken was delicious).
• Take a nice long stroll through the Englischer Garten. Stop and have a beer at the Chinese Tower  and then continue on to see the river surfers.
• Shop for fruit, veggies and gifts at the Viktualienmarkt.
• Take a day trip to Fussen, Germany to see the Bavarian countryside along with the two castles, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangua.
  

Stay tuned for Interlaken, Switzerland—by far one of the most beautiful place I have ever laid eyes on.
