SPICED BEEF HUMMUS PITA PIZZA
I have a major love for pita pizzas. I like to call them pitzas.
Pita pizzas are a nice way to create a fun, flavorful meal that you can get your family involved in.
Today’s Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pizza uses your favorite hummus flavor, spiced ground beef, freshly diced tomatoes and fresh parsley and topped with toasted pine nuts.
The nice thing is you can set all of the ingredients out and let each person create their own pitza using their favorite flavors. And you can get those kids involved in the process! Maybe ground beef isn’t your child’s favorite?
They can create their pitza using the other ingredients.
Or maybe you can set some of these Crunchy Roasted Chickpeas out for extra protein that they can add to the top of their pita?
You can add all kinds of toppings to this pita recipe. I often will serve a salad alongside the pita but also top the pita with that salad.
Sometimes I like to make are this Easy Lebanese Salad, Israeli Salad or this Persian Tomato Cucumber Salad.
The recipe for Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pizza was inspired by one of my favorite local Mediterranean restaurants, Aladdin’s Eatery.
They have a whole section of their menu devoted to pita pizzas ranging from Greek Pitzas, Farmer’s Pitza and the Arayiss Pitza.
My husband always orders one of their pitzas and after trying a few bites every time we go I knew I had to recreate it.
The flavors in this Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pizza work wonderful together.
The hummus is creamy and light, the beef is spiced with rich, warm spices like allspice and cinnamon and the pita pizza is topped with fresh tomatoes, parsley and crunchy toasted pine nuts.
While we tend to eat these for a meal, I think they could make a really nice appetizer for a party.
All you have to do is cut each pita round into small triangles and serve them on a platter.
Other pita and flatbread options that I like are this Spiced Ground Lamb Pita, Greek Pita Pizza, Mediterranean Flatbread, Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pizza and this Mediterranean Naan.
These pita pizzas are easy put together, which is why I love them so much.
You can even prepare all of the ingredients ahead of time to cut down on time.
These are very customizable from using a variety of hummus flavors to a variety of fresh vegetables to feta cheese and a drizzle of plain yogurt.
I am here to show you how easy this Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pizza is to make with the below video.
Once you have your cooked beef ready to go it basically just involves layering each pita with the ingredients and then toasting it for ten minutes.

Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pizza
Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pizza is crispy pita bread topped with a layer of your favorite hummus, spiced ground beef, diced tomatoes, fresh parsley and toasted pine nuts. This is a nice dinner option or even an appetizer at a party!
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon ghee {clarified butter}
- 1/4 cup sweet onion, chopped
- 1 lb. ground beef, I use 80/20
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Dash of pepper
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper {optional}
- 1/2 teaspoon sumac
- 4 pita bread rounds {try whole wheat for a healthier version}
- 1 cup of your favorite hummus, divided {I like to use garlic or classic}
- 1 cup diced tomatoes, divided
- 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped, divided
- 3 Tablespoons toasted pine nuts, divided
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- In a large skillet heat the ghee {butter} over medium high heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 2 minutes. Add the ground beef, salt, pepper, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne pepper and sumac and continue to sauté for 7-8 minutes, or until the beef is browned and cooked through. Set aside.
- Heat a small skillet over medium heat. Add the pine nuts and toast for two minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from the skillet and set aside once toasted.
- Set your four pita rounds on two baking sheets. Start by spreading a thin layer of hummus on each pita followed by the cooked ground beef divided among the four pitas and continue to do the same with the diced tomatoes, fresh parsley and toasted pine nuts.
- Toast the pitas for 10 minutes, or until the pita becomes toasted and slightly crispy.
Notes
Try adding feta cheese to these pita pizzas.
If you can't find ghee {I found mine at Trader Joes and you can also find it as most ethnic and Middle Eastern markets}, you can use olive oil or butter in its place.
You can use whatever hummus you like. I tend to go with garlic or classic for this recipe but feel free to mix things up!
Try adding a drizzle of plain yogurt to each pita pizza.
