Everyone needs an easy, tried and true coleslaw recipe that they can make time and time again.

Today’s Creamy Coleslaw Recipe is one that I like to make for picnics, BBQs or as a topping for my Slow Cooker Barbecue Pulled Pork sandwiches.

You might remember my Healthy Coleslaw recipe which uses a vinegar dressing while today’s coleslaw uses a creamy dressing combining Greek yogurt and mayonnaise.

This recipe is very easy to put together, making it a great side dish to make for a big group when you have a lot of other things to cook.

You can even buy a prepackaged slaw mix to save yourself time.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Easy to Prep: This is a great slaw recipe to prep in advance. You can shred the cabbage and the carrots unless you buy prepackaged. Just leave them in the fridge in airtight containers until you are ready to mix the salad together. Coleslaw holds up well for a few days in the fridge making is a great meal-prep option.
  • Great for a Crowd: If you are going to a summer get together or a party you can double of triple this recipe and it will still be affordable. It also works great as a side dish or as a topping for tacos or sandwiches.
  • Easy Way to Get in Veggies: If you are looking to eat more nutritious vegetables this is the recipe for you! Cabbage is such a good thing to eat and the carrots are also very nutritious!

Recipe Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Cabbage Mix: The cabbage mix is obviously the most important part of a coleslaw. You can either buy a head of cabbage and shred it or you can buy a bagged mix of coleslaw.
  • Matchstick Carrots: I added in some matchstick carrots but you don’t have to. The coleslaw is great either way I just like the added vegetables in mine.
  • Mayonnaise: The mayonnaise is part of the dressing on this coleslaw helping to create a creamy texture.
  • Greek Yogurt: I like adding Greek yogurt to my coleslaw dressing. I like the tangy flavor it adds along with the protein.
  • Dill Weed and Celery Seed: The dill weed and celery seed are a nice addition the coleslaw adding some spice and flavor to the salad. If you have fresh dill you can also use that, just chop it up. You do not have to add these if you don’t want.

Storage Tips

Coleslaw is best when eating within 24 hours but can be kept up to 5 days in an airtight container. As the slaw sits in the fridge it does become a bit softer.

Recipe FAQ

What is the best coleslaw to use?

Green cabbage is the most common, but you can mix in red cabbage for color and Napa cabbage for a softer texture. If you can find a pre-shredded coleslaw mix is a time-saver.

Can I use only mayo or only Greek yogurt?

Yes! You can just use mayo or just Greek yogurt. If you use Greek yogurt it will have a tangier flavor but more protein!

How do I keep the slaw from getting watery?

If you salt the cabbage first it will help with excess water! Toss it with a little salt, let it sit for 20-30 minutes, then drain and pat dry before adding the dressing.

Do you put celery seed in coleslaw?

You don’t have to put celery seed in coleslaw but I highly recommend it. It adds a great traditional flavor to the slaw.

What other vegetables work in this slaw?

I like adding thinly sliced radishes, onion like red onion, bell pepper or celery.
