SWEET AND SPICY TURKEY BURGERS
Football season is upon us. I love this time of year for so many reasons.
Crisp fall air, beautiful colored leaves, soup, apple picking, pumpkin food, and of course football. In my house you will find green, gold and a lot of cheese heads.
YES, my husband grew up in Wisconsin and is a Packers fan.
We now live in Northeast Ohio which means we are surrounded by Browns and Steelers fans, but that will never change the team that Mike roots for.
He is quickly making sure his sons are die hard Packers fans too by making sure they have the appropriately sized jersey each year.
There is nothing better than watching a football game at a tailgate or “homegate” which happens a lot these days since we have two small children.
When the Packers play on a Sunday I know that I will be surrendering my Sunday to football, which I am OK with as long as I get to help pick my favorite football watching foods.
Mike loves to create a really good burger for game day and finds time to fit in grilling them during commercial breaks.
Today’s Sweet and Spicy Turkey Burgers are one of our go-to, favorite turkey burger recipes.
I think that sometimes turkey burgers can be a bit bland so for us it is important to always spice them up in some way whether it is a really good cheese, a delicious sauce or spread, vegetables or maybe all of the above.
Not only do these Sweet and Spicy Turkey Burgers with Guacamole have some spice from the pepper jack cheese and sweet from the roasted mini peppers. {I adore those little guys for so many reasons}
This burger is also topped with guacamole which is hands down my favorite burger topping, and sandwiched between my favorite bun, King’s Hawaiian Hamburger Buns.
If you haven’t tried King’s Hawaiian Hamburger Buns before, they are perfect.
Soft, a little bit sweet and the perfect size for a game day turkey burger.
We also love King’s Hawaiian dinner rolls for sliders which you can easily make using this turkey burger mixture too.
If the game doesn’t fall at meal time, sliders make a good snack or appetizer during the game.
Less food, but still really satisfying.
I don’t know about you but saying goodbye to summer is a little bit easier when I have delicious tailgating food to help me watch the Packers win. 😉
Ok, please don’t leave, I had to throw that in there! And now for that recipe for our favorite turkey burgers….before all of this Packer talk scares anyone away!
Sweet and Spicy Turkey Burgers with Guacamole
Sweet and Spicy Turkey Burgers with Guacamole are perfect for tailgating season. These turkey burgers combine ground turkey, spices, roasted mini sweet peppers, spicy pepper jack cheese and creamy guacamole sandwiched between King's Hawaiian Hamburger Buns. These are the ultimate, lightened up football watching meal to pair with your favorite sides and appetizers.
Ingredients
For the Turkey burgers:
- 4 mini sweet peppers, roasted, chopped
- 1 1/2 lbs. ground turkey
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup red onion, chopped
- 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 Tablespoons rub {use your favorite}
- 1 Tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 2 Tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
- Dash of salt and pepper
- 8 slices of pepper jack cheese
- 8 King's Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Hamburger Buns
For the Guacamole:
- 2 Avocados, seed removed
- 1/3 cup red onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 lime, juiced
- A few pinches of salt
Instructions
- Heat the grill to high heat.
- In a large mixing bowl combine the ground turkey, egg, red onion, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, olive oil, cilantro, salt and pepper. Use hands to combine everything together.
- Form the ground turkey mixture into 3 to 3 1/2 oz. turkey burger patties and set on a large platter.
- Before grilling the turkey burgers make your guacamole by putting the avocado, red onion, cilantro, lime juice and salt in a molcajete or medium bowl and mash the ingredients together until combined. Set aside.
- Lightly oil your grill so the turkey burgers don't stick to it. Place the turkey burger patties on the hottest part of the grill and cook for 2 minutes on each side, so the turkey burgers get a nice sear on them. Move them to the cooler part of the grill and cook for another 8-10 minutes on each side or until they are cooked through. When you flip the turkey burgers the second time add the mini sweet peppers. Grill the sweet peppers for 4 minutes on one side and then flip and grill the other side of the peppers.
- When the turkey burgers are done grilling add the pepper jack cheese and let the burgers sit for two minutes so the cheese can melt. Remove the peppers from the grill and slice into small strips.
- Place the turkey burger on the bottom of the bun; place the sliced mini sweet peppers on top of the pepper jack cheese. Spread the guacamole on the top half of the bun and close the bun.

It is one of my favorites too! The nice thing is these are a little lighter than regular burgers. I agree, topping a burger with guacamole is just about the best thing ever. Thanks for stopping by Danae!
