No matter what holiday you and your family are celebrating or how you’ll be gathering this year make beef the center of your holiday feast, holiday cocktail party or new year’s eve!

Today I am sharing a Beef Crostini with Caramelized Onion in partnership with the Ohio Beef Council. You will love this simple appetizer.

You will love the flavors of the savory, creamy goat cheese with the sweet caramelized onions and the tender roast beef. All of these delicious flavors are topped on a crispy crostini. I love offering my guests a variety of appetizers and this roast beef crostini is a great one to add.

When making this crostini I like to use this Roast Beef Recipe and then thinly slice it for the crostini. If you make the above roast beef recipe you will have half of the roast beef left to serve for another meal like roast beef sandwiches.

When you host your holiday meal this is a great appetizer alongside your Herb Butter Roasted Turkey, Lemon Arugula Salad and this Sweet Potato Casserole.

Recipe Ingredients

For exact ingredient amounts and instructions, see the full recipe card below.

  • Beef: This recipe uses beef top round roast that is thinly sliced. To save time you can buy roast beef from the deli. I like to buy thinly sliced to make it easier to fold it.
  • Spices: The spice mixture if oregano, rosemary and parsley. You can also use other spices like Italian seasoning or za’tar.
  • Garlic: I like to add fresh garlic but you can also use garlic powder in its place.
  • Crostini: For the crostini you will need sweet onions that you caramelize, olive oil, goat cheese and a french baguette.

Recipe Tip: You can use any leftover beef like filet mignon, hanger steak, ribeye steak, sirloin steak or beef tenderloin you have for this crostini. I really enjoy roast beef which you can roast on your own or buy at the store pre-cooked.

How to Make this Beef Crostini with Caramelized Onion

Step 1: Roast the Beef: Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Combine all of the spices and garlic in a small bowl along with the olive oil. Coat the beef with the herb and garlic mixture, making sure to coat both sides.

Place the roast on a wire rack inside a shallow baking dish or use a roasting pan with a wire rack. Sprinkle with a bit more salt and pepper. Roast for 15 minutes at 450 degrees F.

Reduce temperature to 325°F and roast an additional 1 hour to 1 hour and 5 minutes or until medium rare (125- to 130°F) doneness.

Step 2: Caramelize the Onions: Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.

Add the sliced onions and cook stirring every few minutes to prevent them from sticking and coloring too much in any one place, until blonde-colored, 15–20 minutes.

Step 3: Create Goat Cheese Mixture: Place the goat cheese, 1 tablespoon olive oil and half the parsley and a pinch of salt into a mixer and mix on medium for 3-4 minutes until whipped.

Step 4: Create Crostini: Preheat the oven to 400 F. Arrange the slices on a baking sheet in a single layer. Lay the slices flat on oiled cookie sheet. Pour the 1 Tablespoon olive oil in a small dish. Brush the top of each crostini with olive oil. Bake the crostini for 4-5 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly. Spread a layer of goat cheese on each crostini. Top the goat cheese with the onions and then the sliced roast beef. Garnish with the remaining parsley and serve!

Recipe Tip: Oven roasting is a go-to cooking method during the holidays because it generally uses a lower temperature over a longer period, allowing you to “set it and forget it”.

Storage Tips

  • Storing Leftovers: Don’t reserve beef for just the main course, incorporate it into holiday appetizers, too! Just remember to always refrigerate leftovers that incorporate beef within 2 hours after cooking.
  • Storing the Beef: Planning to buy beef in advance for your holiday feast? You can freeze beef in its original packaging up to two weeks. For longer storage, wrap in heavy-duty aluminum foil or place in plastic freezer bags, removing as much air as possible.
