HUMMUS WITH SPICED BEEF AND TOASTED PINE NUTS
Today I am excited to share one of my favorite meals and appetizers.
Yes, this Hummus with Spiced Beef and Toasted Pine Nuts has many purposes.
Are you having a party?
This is a warm, comforting dip to serve with some cut up pita bread.
Are you looking for a quick, healthy and protein filled meal? This is your answer!
When I make this I like to make a homemade hummus like this Easy Hummus Recipe, Lemon Hummus Recipe or this Spicy Hummus Recipe.
To save yourself time you can pick up your favorite hummus from the store.
That will be the base to this dish and then will be topped with ground beef that is spiced with warm Lebanese spices.
The cinnamon, allspice, cayenne pepper, paprika, clove and garlic come together to create a warm, savory combination of flavors that are my favorite when paired with beef.
The ground beef is also sautéed with sweet onion for a little extra flavor.
I like to top my ground beef with toasted pine nuts for that extra crunch along with freshly chopped parsley.
I have mentioned this before, but hummus was something we ate from the time I was a small child.
My mom’s side of the family is Lebanese and hummus was always an appetizer on our table, especially around the holidays.
You can always count on someone to bring a big platter of creamy, homemade hummus with cut up pita bread.
There is nothing wrong with a plate of creamy hummus but there is something even more warming and delicious about a plate of hummus with spiced beef and toasted pine nuts on it.
I also really like to make this as a meal for my family because it is so easy.
If you like this Hummus with Spiced Beef you might also like this Spiced Beef and Hummus Pita Pitza, Greek Beef Pita Pizza or this Spiced Ground Lamb Pita.
My kids love the flavors in the beef and sometimes I will put everything out separately so they can make a pita filled with hummus, beef, tomatoes and parsley.
You can even make a batch of tabbouleh which is a great topping for the Hummus with Spiced Beef and Toasted Pine Nuts.
The nice thing about this dish is how many uses it has–from a meal, to an appetizer to a snack.
Are you one of those people that loves adding fun garnishes and extra healthy ingredients?

Hummus with Spiced Beef and Toasted Pine Nuts
Hummus with Spiced Beef and Toasted Pine Nuts is an easy appetizer, lunch or dinner featuring creamy hummus topped with warm, spiced beef, toasted pine nuts, freshly chopped tomatoes and parsley. It is gluten-free and full of protein.
Ingredients
FOR THE HUMMUS
- 1 -16 oz can of chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
- juice of 1 lemon
- 1/3 cup tahini
- 1 or 2 cloves garlic
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil {you may want more for thinner hummus}
- Parsley and paprika to garnish
FOR THE SPICED BEEF
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil {or 1 Tablespoon clarified butter ghee}
- 1 pound ground beef, {I use 80/20}
- 1/4 of a sweet onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon clove
GARNISH
- 1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted
- Freshly chopped tomatoes
- Freshly chopped parsley
- A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
Instructions
FOR THE HUMMUS:
- Combine all ingredients in the food processor. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute (blend longer for more creamy texture). Add a small amount of additional olive oil to thin out the hummus and blend again if you think it is too thick. Set aside.
FOR THE BEEF:
- In a large skillet heat the olive oil {or ghee} over medium high heat. Add the onion and garlic and saute until the onion is translucent. Add the ground beef and turn to medium heat.
- Use a wooden spoon to break apart the ground beef and let it begin to cook. Add the cinnamon, allspice, cayenne pepper, paprika and clove to the beef and continue to cook until the ground beef is cooked through and no pink is left.
- Remove the ground beef from the stove and drain excess fat.
FOR THE PINE NUTS:
- Heat a dry large skillet over medium-low heat and toast pine nuts, stirring frequently, until pine nuts are golden in spots, about 3 minutes. Remove and set aside.
TO ASSEMBLE THE HUMMUS WITH BEEF:
- Spread your hummus on a platter. Top with the ground beef mixture. Garnish with the toasted pine nuts, freshly chopped tomatoes and parsley and a drizzle of olive oil. Serve with pita bread.
Notes
Other garnish ideas: fresh chickpeas, chopped mint, pomegranate seeds, paprika, olive oil, za'atar or sumac
