One thing I try to focus on when creating recipes for A Cedar Spoon is easy meals and snacks that can be made from scratch.

Things that don’t take hours and hours to do and you can eat the rewards all week long.

For example, on Sundays in my house you might find a batch of granola baking, the food processor whipping up a quick batch of peanut butter and hummus, and making a healthy tomato sauce for pasta dishes and my freezer.

A staple in my house that we eat on a weekly basis is pita bread.

 We have a local Middle Eastern store that sells all of the ingredients I need for my Lebanese recipes, including racks of fresh pita bread.

As a little girl I would go with my Grandpa to pick up fresh pita bread from his favorite Lebanese store, so it brings back great memories to stop in and continue the tradition.

Homemade Baked Pita Chips

When it comes to pita bread there are two camps.

The thin and the thick pita bread lovers.

Both work great for sandwiches and dipping but for hummus and making Homemade Baked Pita Chips I tend to like the thin pita bread.

One thing I have found with fresh pita bread is that if you don’t eat it within the first few days of having it, you will need to freeze it or make pita chips, because it starts to get hard.

Homemade Baked Pita Chips is a great option for that extra pita bread and they are simple to make.

The nice thing about making your own pita chips is you can control the spice and salt that is used and of course the crunchiness.

If you like your pita chips extra salty, then up the salt in the recipe.  Or wait until they are done baking, test one and add more to taste.

These are very customizable to your liking, which is another thing I love about making them at home.

These will last in an airtight container for a few weeks, but they rarely last that long in my house.

They make a great on-the-go snack for the kids and adults and a nice dipper for your hummus or other summer dips.

Ingredients

  • 4 large pita bread rounds, cut into 8 triangles {total of 32 pita triangles}
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt {more or less depending on your desire for salty pita chips}
  • Dash of pepper

Instructions

  • Preaheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  • While the oven is preheating cut the pita into triangles and arrange in a single layer on two large non-stick baking sheets {if you don’t have non-stick I suggest spaying a quick nonstick spray on your cookie sheet so they don’t stick}.
  • In a small mixing bowl combine the olive oil, garlic, sea salt and one grind of a pepper mill.
  • Using a brush coat each side of the pita triangles with the olive oil mixture.
  • Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes or until a light golden brown color {make sure to watch them so they don’t burn}, flipping the pita triangles over half way through cooking.
  • Let the pita chips cool, break the pita chips to your liking or leave them whole and serve with hummus or your favorite dip. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

Notes

  • Everyone’s oven varies when cooking so be sure to check your pita chips as you approach the 10 minute mark to make sure they don’t burn.[br]You can store these in an airtight container for

    I have a love hate relationship with pita chips. I could eat a whole bowl full and they are really just gone in a split second. Then I feel bad I ate the huge bowl full! Haha. At least with your recipe they’ll be homemade now! This looks great!

    1. Julia says:

      Yes, it can be hard not to eat the whole bowl! 🙂 Add a little healthy hummus and use whole wheat pita and at least it is healthier!

    What a great idea to make your own pita chips! I never would’ve thought to do that. I do like the idea of doing thin pitas though because I do find most pita chips that you can buy to be too thick for my tastes. These look fantastic!

    1. Julia says:

      I like them thin too! Try these out–I bet you would like them Des!
