HOW TO COOK SHISHITO PEPPERS
At the end of summer I finally picked up a package of shishito peppers from Trader Joes. I had been hearing about them for quite some time and had been wanting to see what all the rage was. I don’t know what it is about those small, green shishito peppers but I am hooked. Today I am going to walk you through How to Cook Shishito Peppers. It couldn’t be easier. I know the season is ending for shishito peppers but if you can still get your hands on them, you should!
You can actually put them on the grill, roast them in the oven or just sauté them in a hot skillet which is my preferred way of making them. Shishito peppers are a mild Japanese pepper with a very thin skin which helps it blister quickly and become soft and easy to eat.
The fun part of shishito peppers is there is usually one or two spicy peppers that will pop up in a container that you buy at the store, so you never know what you are going to get!
HOW TO MAKE SHISHITO PEPPERS
My preferred way of making shishito pepper is to sauté them in a hot skillet with a small amount of oil, salt and pepper. Sometimes I will spice them up with some spices or a squeeze of lemon juice and other times I keep it super simple with just the salt and pepper.
- For this shishito peppers recipe start by washing and fully drying the shishito peppers before you cook them. You want to make sure they are dry so they blister correctly.
- Next toss the peppers in olive oil, sesame oil or avocado oil. Sprinkle salt and pepper on them along with any additional spices you like.
- Heat a large cast iron or non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
- Transfer the shishito peppers to the hot skillet in a single layer and sauté, stirring and tossing occasionally, until peppers are beginning to char and soften which takes about 5-6 minutes. They should slightly blister on each side which lets you know they are done.
- Remove from the heat and place in a serving dish with extra salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice.
