If you love apple, then you have to try my recipe for Easy Air Fryer Apple Chips. I flavor my apple slices with ground cinnamon and nutmeg, before placing into the air fryer for a quick cook. The result is delicious spiced cinnamon apple chips, a great tasting, healthy snack with no added sugar.
AIR FRYER APPLE CHIPS
My kids are constantly asking me for snacks.
I don’t know if anyone else experiences this but I am guessing they do.
I like to have delicious snacks on hand in the car or pantry for them that are filling and healthy. The entire family will love these.
Today’s Air Fryer Apple Chips are a great option and are so easy to make. They are a healthy alternative to potato chips but still have that crunchy texture we all love. I prefer these crispy apple chips to store-bought apple chips.
I often have these Date Protein Balls, Crispy Chickpeas, Easy Date Granola Bars and these Homemade Banan Oatmeal Cookies on hand.
I love using my air fryer to make these because of how easy the clean-up is. Today’s recipe is one an air fryer recipe that you will make time and time again.
I always make my Cinnamon Apple Chips in Air Fryer as they cook far more quickly than they would in a dehydrator.
Hands on prep time is minimal, these apple chips take only 10 minutes to prepare so it is a win-win.
This nutritious snack is a great alternative to processed snacks, making them ideal for school lunch boxes, or a quick snack-on-the go.
AIR FRYER APPLE CHIPS RECIPE INGREDIENTS
These apple chips use simple ingredients you usually have at home!
APPLES: I used 2 gala apples, but you can use any other of your favorite apples you. Some type of apples that work are Honey Crisp, Pink Lady Apples, Fuji, Golden Delicious or even Granny Smith apples.
Make sure you thinly slice the apples using either a sharp knife or a mandolin.
SPICES: I flavor the apples with ground cinnamon and nutmeg.
You could also add some ground ginger, or a pinch of ground cloves or anise. The warm spices work very well with apples and will remind you of fall.
OIL: I melt a small amount of coconut oil to coat the apples, which helps the spices to stick to the apple.
Another option is to swap out the coconut oil for olive oil.
RECIPE TIPS & MODIFICATIONS
- USING A MANDOLIN: A mandolin slicer is very sharp, so always take care when using a mandoline slicer, read operating instructions properly and always use a guard.
- ENSURE EVEN SIZED SLICES: If using a knife rather than a mandolin, try and get the apple slices as even as possible, this will ensure they will all cook evenly at the same rate.
- COOK IN A SINGLE LAYER: When you place the apple slices into the air fryer you can have them overlapping a little, but just make sure they are not placed directly on top of each other other.
- YIELD: Cut thinly, you will get around 20 – 30 slices from each of the apples. Just keep in mind, it really depends on the size of the apple.
- ADJUST THE COOKING TIME: Cook the apples for 8 minutes instead of 6 if you want them darker and crispier.
- HOW TO STORE APPLE CHIPS: Once cooked and completely cooled, store the apple chips in an airtight container on the counter top for 7-10 days. Do not place into the refrigerator or them will become soggy and lose all crispness.
- PLAY WITH THE SPICING: I have used ground cinnamon and nutmeg to flavor the apples, but some ground ginger, or a pinch of ground cardamon, cloves or anise. You could even use a mixed spice blend like apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice blend. Try spicing them up with cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper.
- SWAP THE FRUIT: This recipe could also work with other fruits like sliced pears, bananas or plums, just adjust the cooking time accordingly.
HOW TO MAKE CRISPY APPLE CHIPS IN THE AIR FRYER
PREPARE THE APPLES. Start by washing the apples, then remove the stem but leave the skin on.
With a mandolin set to 3mm or a very sharp knife, slice the apples into round chips leaving the skin on.
Now remove the seeds. Always make sure to follow safety guidelines with your mandolin.
ADD THE SPICES. Toss the apples with the melted coconut oil, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated in a medium bowl or extended plate. (Whatever is easier for you to turn the apple slices.)
AIR FRY THE APPLES. Preheat the air-fryer to 300F.
Place the prepared apple slices in the air fryer basket, in a single layer. Cook for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through. Continue to cook the apple in batches until you are done with all of the apple slices.
CRISP UP THE APPLES. Now remove the apple chips from the Air Fryer and set them onto a cooling rack.
The apples will continue to crisp up as they cool. If any feel damp or still squishy, leave those in the air fryer for another 2 minutes.
ARE APPLE CHIPS BETTER IN AIR FRYER OR DEHYDRATOR?
I would always recommend using an air fryer as it has a far higher cooking temperature.
This means you can dehydrate the apple a lot more quickly than you would if you made dehydrated apples.
The air fryer really cuts down the recipe to a fraction of the time.
HOW HEALTHY ARE HOMEMADE APPLE CHIPS?
I don’t add any extra sugar to my apple chips, just some spices and a little coconut oil.
Apples are a great source of vitamins and fiber, so this makes a really easy snack. They are very moreish, so just make sure you don’t over-indulge and eat too many.
WHY ARE MY APPLE CHIPS SOGGY?
If your apple chips are soggy it is most likely one of two things.
Either the apple slices are too thick, which is why I recommend using a mandolin if you have one.
Or, you haven’t cooked the apples for long enough.
Check your apples before removing them from the air fryer, and if they are a little soft, pop them back in for a further 1-2 minutes.
WHAT VARIETY OF APPLE IS BEST FOR MAKING APPLE CHIPS?
I have used Gala apples as they have a great flavor and crisp texture.
Good alternatives would be Braeburn, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Granny Smith or Red Delicious apples.
HOW TO USE AIR FRYER APPLE CHIPS
Apple chips make a great tasting snack and I love that you can make these all year round. Pop a few into a Ziploc bag for a great snack on the go or add them to the kids lunch boxes.
Try dipping them in some peanut butter, for a more substantial snack with a little added protein. My kids love them this way!
I also like to add apple chips to salads, they add great texture and crunch.
