Hawaiian Salmon is the perfect way to eat Wild Alaskan Salmon in the warmer months. Salmon pairs perfectly with a sweet, savory marinade.

In this recipe the salmon is marinaded in a Hawaiian style sauce and then grilled to perfection creating a tender, juicy and flavorful piece of salmon. The grilled pineapple rings are a beautiful addition to the salmon and add that sweet fruity flavor with each bite of salmon.

The marinade is simple to make but full of flavor. It marinade mixes together ketchup, soy sauce, minced garlic, brown sugar, pineapple juice, sesame oil, oregano, ginger and crushed red pepper. As a time saving shortcut use pre-cored pineapple.

Serve the Hawaiian Salmon with the pineapple, freshly chopped green onions alongside a vegetable and side salad.  Your guests will love this delicious salmon dish! I love pairing this salmon recipe with Mediterranean Roasted Vegetables, No Mayo Potato Salad or this Summer Orzo Pasta Salad.

Recipe Ingredients

Hawaiian Grilled Salmon ingredients.

These simple pantry staples are all you need. See the recipe card below for exact amounts and printable instructions.

  • Salmon: I like to buy wild caught salmon when I make this recipe but use whatever you have on hand.
  • Pineapple: This recipe uses pre-cored pineapple {or you can core on your own} along with pineapple juice, creating a sweet, delicious flavor.
  • Soy Sauce: The salty soy sauce balances the sweetness and works so well to create that Hawaiian style flavor.
  • Brown Sugar: The sweet brown sugar also balances the flavors and makes a great pairing with the salmon.
  • Ginger: Spicy ginger is a great pairing for the other flavors in this recipe. You can use fresh or ground ginger.

How to Make Grilled Salmon

Step 1: Marinade Salmon: It is time to marinate the salmon. To do this you need a large mixing bowl or ziplock bag. Add the soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar, ketchup, ginger, oregano, crushed red pepper, and pineapple juice. Mix everything well.

Add the salmon and coat in the flavors. Refrigerate for 20 minutes minimum.

Step 2: Prepare Salmon for Cooking: Once the salmon has had sufficient time in the refrigerator, take it out and let them come down to room temperature.

Spray the grill with non-stick cooking spray or brush with olive oil and heat it to medium-high.

Step 3: Cook Salmon: Place the salmon and the pineapple rings on the grill and use a brush to coat more of the marinade on the salmon.

Close the grill and grill for about 6-7 minutes on each side or until the internal temperature reaches 145 Degrees Fahrenheit.

Remove the salmon and pineapple from the grill. Place the salmon on a platter and garnish with fresh green onion, cilantro, or parsley. Serve the pineapple alongside the salmon.

Recipe Notes

  • If you want to grill each side you can but it isn’t essential. If you choose not to flip them then you will want to grill the salmon on the skin side down for about 13-15 minutes.
  • Keep some marinade to one side so that you can brush the salmon and pineapple while cooking. This is a great method if you choose to use the BBQ grill and cook outside.
  • You can either use ground ginger or fresh ginger if you have it. Fresh ginger is such a nice addition and adds a ton of flavor.

Ways to Modify this Salmon

  • If you can’t get your hands on any pineapple juice then orange juice is a great alternative.
  • Fresh pineapple is great to use, but you can also use canned pineapple if you prefer. You could also use the pineapple juice that you get in the can.
  • If you like a hint of spice you can add crushed red pepper, cayenne red pepper or sriracha sauce.
  • Add grilled vegetables alongside your salmon. I like to throw them on while my salmon is grilling for the perfect pairing.

Storage Tips

If you have any leftovers then let them cool completely and add them to an airtight container. You can then store them in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. This is perfect to make ahead for lunches.
