In many Middle Eastern recipes there is either ground lamb or ground beef added in.

The spices that are mixed together with the lamb are so warm and add a lot of flavor. I used cumin, cinnamon, oregano, cloves, paprika, allspice and cayenne red pepper.

When I am looking for a healthy, protein packed lunch or weeknight dinner I often look to hummus bowls.
The nice thing is that you can pair the ingredients you have on hand. You can chop your ingredients ahead of time and cook the lamb and have it ready to assemble when you need a quick meal option.
What is Minced Lamb?
Minced lamb is a lean meat using ground lamb that is mixed with spices, onion and garlic. You will like the richness of the lamb with the spices.
This type of ground meat mixture is often used for many Middle Eastern recipes from adding it to pitas, to topping it over hummus, adding it to a salad or alongside a Mediterranean salad like this Easy Lebanese Salad.
You can modify the middle eastern spices you add to your minced lamb but I like to add a mixture of cumin, cinnamon, oregano, cloves, paprika, allspice and cayenne red pepper. You also could mix the ground lamb with this spice mixture to make lamb koftas or lamb kofta kebabs.
These are the same spices I use to flavor the ground beef in this Hummus with Spiced Beef and Toasted Pine Nuts.
How Can I use Minced Lamb
I love having minced lamb on hand to add to healthy recipes throughout the week. Here are some of my favorite ways to use the lamb:
- Add it Toast or Naan: You can use the lamb to add to toast or naan like in this Mediterranean Flatbread, Mediterranean Hummus Tabbouleh Naan, Mediterranean Naan Pizza, Tomato Toast with Whipped Feta or this Mediterranean Toast with Za’atar. You also could sub the lamb for ground beef in this Greek Beef Pita Pizza.
- Rice or Hummus Bowls: I am a big fan of houmous bowls and rice bowls with a olives, hummus, fresh vegetables and a dollop of greek yogurt. This minced lamb is a great addition to those bowls. Try adding it to this Mediterranean Salmon Bowl, Greek Quinoa Bowl, Easy Mediterranean Hummus Bowl or this Mediterranean Buddah Bowl. I like adding a yogurt sauce to the bowls like this Tahini Yogurt Sauce.
- Pita Sandwiches or Wraps: You can use this lamb in pitas like in these Spiced Lamb Pitas. Try switching beef mince for lamb in these Lebanese Meat Stuffed Pitas {Arayes} or these Mediterranean Steak Pita Wraps.
- Pair With a Salad: I like to add this lamb alongside of Mediterranean Salads like Tabbouleh, Fattoush, Mediterranean Eggplant Salad, Persian Tomato Cucumber Salad or this Tomato Cucumber Feta Quinoa Salad.
Recipe Ingredients
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: I use extra virgin olive oil to cook the lamb and the onions and garlic in. You can use whatever oil you prefer.
- Garlic: The garlic isn’t a necessity but I personally like the flavor it adds.
- Onion: You can use sweet onions or red onions. I perfect the taste of red onions but either works. Try to diced the onion finely so mixes in nicely with the meat.
- Ground Lamb: You can often find ground lamb in the meat department but if you can’t ask your butcher to help you.
- Spices: The spice mixture that I used is cumin, cinnamon, oregano, cloves, paprika, allspice and cayenne pepper.
How Do You Make Minced Lamb
1. Mix the Spices: In a small mixing bowl combine the spice mixture of salt, black pepper, cumin, cinnamon, oregano, cloves, paprika and cayenne red pepper and mix well.
2. Saute the Onion and Garlic: Heat a large saucepan over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Add the garlic and red onion and sauté for 2 minutes.
3. Cook the Lamb: Add the ground lamb and the spice mixture and brown until cooked through, about 5-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Use the ground lamb in hummus or rice bowls, pitas, pasta and more. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
