Why You Will Love Whipped Cottage Cheese
Easy to Prepare: This easy whipped cottage cheese dip can be prepared and is ready to enjoy in just 5 minutes. The main work comes with whipping the cottage cheese into a creamy consistency. This is such a great dip for spring!
Versatile: Using a base of cottage cheese and black pepper, you can pretty much add any other ingredient to flavor this easy dip. I love fresh herbs and lemon juice.
Savory and Sweet: I’ve opted for savory whipped cottage cheese dips, but with a few minor adjustments, you can go all out on sweet flavors for the perfect whipped cottage cheese dessert.
Protein Packed: From a nutrition standpoint, cottage cheese is a great source of protein to your diet, can be low in calories and contains important nutrients like calcium, vitamin A, and B vitamins. You will love this high-protein dip.
Recipe Ingredients:
The base ingredients for plain whipped cottage cheese are two simple ingredients:
- Cheese: I use a 16 ounce container of full-fat cottage cheese to serve 2-3. You can use low-fat, but I find it to be less creamy.
- Seasoning: I season the cottage cheese with a crack of fresh black pepper. I don’t add salt, as there is enough salt in the cottage cheese.
Garlic Herb Whipped Cottage Cheese
- Oil: I use extra virgin olive oil in this dip, as it has a great nutty flavor.
- Garlic: I use fresh minced garlic because it has the best flavor.
- Fresh Herbs: I used combination of fresh parsley, basil and chives in this herby dip.
Lemon Herb Whipped Cottage Cheese
- Lemon: I use both lemon juice and lemon zest to flavor the dip.
- Garlic: I use fresh minced garlic as it has the best flavor.
- Fresh Herbs: I used combination of fresh parsley and dill in this zesty citrus dip.
How to Make Whipped Cottage Cheese
You can serve this delicious whipped cottage cheese recipe plain, or add flavors to the cheese as I have done.
For Plain Whipped Cottage Cheese:
Add the cottage cheese to a high speed food processor or blender along with the black pepper.
Blend until smooth. Taste and add more black pepper to taste.
Below are 2 of my favorite flavor variations.
Garlic Herb Whipped Cottage Cheese
PREPARE THE DIP: Add the cottage cheese, black pepper, olive oil, garlic, parsley, chives and basil to a high-speed blender and blend until you have a creamy dip.
ADJUST TO TASTE: Taste and season with more salt and pepper to taste. If you want a thinner texture, you can add a tad more olive oil or lemon juice.
SERVE THE DIP: Serve in a shallow bowl with fresh herbs and crushed red pepper. Serve with fresh vegetables and pita chips.
Lemon Herb Whipped Cottage Cheese
PREPARE THE DIP: Add the cottage cheese, black pepper, lemon juice and lemon zest, garlic, fresh dill and fresh parsley into the high-speed blender and process until smooth.
ADJUST TO TASTE: Taste and season with more salt and pepper to taste. If you want a thinner texture, you can add a tad more olive oil or lemon juice.
SERVE THE DIP: Serve in a shallow bowl with fresh herbs and crushed red pepper. Serve with fresh vegetables, graham crackers or pita chips.
Modifications for Homemade Whipped Cottage Cheese
Citrus: I’ve used lemon zest and juice in this dip, but you could substitute with other citrus like orange or lime, depending on how you want to serve the dip.
Garlic: For a sweeter dip, swap lemon for orange, and leave out the garlic and herbs. You can also use garlic powder in place of the fresh garlic if needed.
Fresh Herbs: Use any variety of fresh herbs in this versatile recipe: parsley, chives, cilantro, basil, tarragon, oregano, dill, mint.
Ranch: You can create a ranch cottage cheese dip. Just add a packed of ranch seasoning and stir!
Spices: If you like a spicy dip try adding red pepper flakes or hot sauce.
Tomatoes: Add some sun-dried tomatoes to the dip.
Recipe Tips
Double the Recipe: This recipe is easily doubled or tripled if you are feeding a larger group of diners.
Fridge: Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, stir before serving. I like to taste the dip and add more fresh herbs if needed.
Leftovers: Leftover dip makes a great addition to a layered sandwich for an easy lunch the next day.
How to Serve Whipped Cottage Cheese
What I love most about whipped cottage cheese is that it can be served both sweet and savory.
As a Dip: As a dip it works great with some fresh veggies, or pita chips, try my Homemade Baked Pita Chips, or Air Fryer Pita Chips.
Sandwiches: Layer whipped cottage cheese into your favorite sandwich, or spread over toast with your favorite toppings.
For example, try adding the lemon whipped cottage cheese to toast along with fresh strawberry preserves and a drizzle of honey.
Toast: Or top your toast with fresh or roasted stone fruits. Try sliced peaches with a drizzle of honey and a scattering of pistachio nuts along with the cottage cheese dip. You also could top your avocado toast with the whipped cottage cheese.
Breakfast Topping: Go sweet and leave out the garlic and herbs, opting for orange juice and zest and a little honey to sweeten the dip. This delicious whipped cottage cheese is the perfect topping for pancakes or waffles.
Is Whipped Cottage Cheese like Ricotta?
Whipped cottage cheese can be used in place of ricotta in many recipes, although they do differ a little in flavor. Where whipped cottage cheese is slightly salty, ricotta has a sweeter flavor.
How Can I Substitute Cottage Cheese in Recipes
In Place of Ricotta: Cottage cheese can be used as a substitute for ricotta cheese in recipes such as lasagna, stuffed shells, or cannelloni. Just blend the cottage cheese until smooth if you prefer a texture closer to ricotta.
Dips: It can be blended into dips like this Lemon Artichoke Dip or this Whipped Feta Dip.
Toast: Whipped cottage cheese is great as a substitute to other soft cheeses on toast. I love adding it to this Tomato Toast with Whipped Feta {sub for the feta} or this Mediterranean Hummus Toast {sub for the hummus}.
Salads: Cottage cheese can be used as a substitute for other soft cheeses in salads. It adds a creamy texture and a boost of protein. You can use it in salads, like mixed green salads or a Greek salad.
Topping: It can be a great topping on various dishes like baked potatoes, tacos or nachos.
Baked Goods: Another great use is as a substitute for other dairy products like yogurt or sour cream in baked goods such as muffins, pancakes, or cakes. It adds moisture and richness to the baked goods.
Smoothies: Blend it into smoothies to add creaminess and a boost of protein. It pairs well with fruits like berries, bananas, or peaches.
